There are new technological advances being made all the time. And if you’re a Des Moines homeowner who likes gadgets, it’s always a good idea to see if there are some new ways to improve your home’s technology. Even if technology isn’t really your thing, you probably are interested in greater efficiency and simplicity, so learning about updated tech upgrades for your home is still worth exploring. And in the case of preparing your home for a sale, upgraded features can boost your home’s appeal for prospective buyers. Here are a few tech upgrades to consider:

The Thermostat

If you want to keep your house warm, and do it in the most efficient way, a smart thermostat system is a great choice. The options are many — from basic to quite complex — and your choice will be based on what you need and what’s in the budget. A couple features that may sound immediately appealing are: being able to adjust the temperature from an app on your phone, and setting the temperature to coincide when the home will actually be in use.

Safety

There are dozens of helpful tech options available if you want to increase your home’s safety and security. Start with assessing your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Upgrading to the latest technology will give you some additional peace of mind. Many of us already have video doorbells, and if you don’t, they can be worth looking into. Particularly if you get packages delivered regularly when you’re not home, they give you the ability to monitor your deliveries from anywhere.

Lighting

We’ve written before about how improving your home’s lighting can improve your security and aesthetics. In this case, technological improvements have made for greater energy efficiency. LED lighting is another affordable option for anyone considering an upgrade. Some other improvements include the ability to customize the type of light depending on your current needs, and being able to program your lights to turn on when you enter a room.

Tidiness

Robotic vacuums have been around for a decade, but they’re getting more effective all the time. They won’t eliminate your need to vacuum altogether, but they certainly can help to keep your floor clean and reduce the frequency with which you need to manually vacuum. Here’s a good one for pet owners — self-cleaning litter boxes. And air purifiers are also a great choice for homeowners who want to decrease dust and allergens and keep the air feeling clean.

You don’t necessarily need to always stay on top of the latest home technology, but it’s a good idea to check in every couple years and see if any of the upgrades are worth incorporating.
